1Why Is Aedes the Mosquito That Matters Most?
Quick Answer: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus spread dengue, and both breed in small pockets of clean standing water around homes and workplaces. They bite in the daytime, so nets at night do not protect you. That is why mosquito control services in Malaysia focus on Aedes first: stopping it where it breeds protects everyone on the property.
This guide is for homeowners, tenants, condo managers and business operators in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. It covers where Aedes breeds, what mosquito control services in Malaysia should include, whether fogging works and how often to book. It is written by NPC Pest Control, a licensed operator in Puchong with over 15 years of pest work across the Klang Valley. For the service itself, see our mosquito control service page.
The numbers explain the urgency. Malaysia recorded 122,423 dengue cases in 2024, according to a 2026 study in Frontiers in Public Health. The World Health Organization’s dengue fact sheet names removing the water where Aedes breeds as a core part of prevention. There is no quick spray that replaces that step.

2Where Do Aedes Mosquitoes Breed Around Your Property?
Quick Answer: Aedes lays eggs just above the waterline in small containers: plant pot trays, blocked roof gutters, drains, pails, air-con drip trays and rubbish that catches rain. The eggs can survive dry for months and hatch after the next downpour. Mosquito control services in Malaysia start by finding these spots, because every biting adult started in one of them.
| Property | Plant pots and trays | Roof gutters | Drains | Pails and containers | Air-con trays | Construction debris |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Terrace or landed home | Common | Common | Occasional | Common | Occasional | Rare |
| Condo or apartment | Common | Rare | Occasional | Rare | Common | Rare |
| Shoplot or restaurant | Occasional | Occasional | Common | Common | Occasional | Rare |
| Factory or warehouse | Rare | Occasional | Common | Common | Rare | Occasional |
| Construction site | Rare | Rare | Occasional | Common | Rare | Common |

The pattern above comes from what our technicians find during inspections. The type of property changes where to look first:
- Terrace and landed homes. Plant pots, saucers, roof gutters and pails in the back yard are the usual suspects. A blocked gutter can hold water for weeks without anyone seeing it.
- Condos and apartments. Balcony plants and air-con drip trays are the main sources. Shared areas such as podium gardens and car park drains belong to the management.
- Shoplots and restaurants. Back lane drains, stacked containers and wet bin areas breed Aedes as well as flies.
- Factories and construction sites. Tyres, drums, tarps, open tanks and uneven ground hold rainwater across large areas.
Small is the problem. A bottle cap of water is enough for Aedes larvae. That is why a quick look from the gate is not an inspection. Our guide to what pest control services in Malaysia include explains how a full site check covers mosquitoes alongside other pests.
3What Do Mosquito Control Services in Malaysia Include?
Quick Answer: A proper mosquito job starts with an inspection of the compound, gutters, drains and containers. The technician removes or treats breeding sites, applies larvicide to water that cannot be emptied and sprays shady resting spots with a residual product. Good mosquito control services in Malaysia also leave a written report and return on a set schedule.
A full visit covers five parts:
- Inspection. Garden, porch, roof gutters, drains, balconies, plant pots, air-con trays and any stored containers. The technician notes breeding spots and where adults rest.
- Breeding-site removal. Tipping, covering or draining water, and clear advice on what the owner should check each week.
- Larviciding. Treating drains, sumps and other water that must stay, so larvae die before they fly.
- Residual barrier spray. Treating the undersides of leaves, hedges, walls and dark corners where adult Aedes rest between bites.
- Service report. A written record of what was found and treated, useful for condo committees and health inspections.
How to prepare your home for a mosquito control visit
These five steps help the technician find the real sources quickly.
- Do not clear everything the night before. Leave pots and containers as they are, so the technician sees where water collects.
- Note when and where you get bitten. Morning in the garden or evening at the porch points to different resting spots.
- Clear access to the roof gutters and drains. Move cars or furniture blocking the back yard, porch or drain covers.
- Bring pets and fish indoors or cover ponds. Tell the technician about fish ponds so they use a fish-safe approach.
- Close windows during spraying. Keep doors and windows shut until the outdoor spray has dried.

4Does Mosquito Fogging Actually Work?
Quick Answer: Fogging works for a short time and only on adults. The mist kills the mosquitoes it touches on the day, but it does not reach eggs and larvae in water and leaves no lasting protection. The chart below shows how biting activity typically rebounds after fogging alone, while combined treatment keeps it down. Illustrative guide.
| Approach | Week 0 | Week 1 | Week 3 | Week 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fogging only | 100 | 30 | 85 | 105 |
| Owner clean-up only | 100 | 90 | 60 | 50 |
| Larviciding only | 100 | 85 | 55 | 45 |
| Source removal + larviciding + barrier spray | 100 | 45 | 20 | 10 |
Source: illustrative model, typical Aedes problem at a Klang Valley landed home, NPC Pest Control, 2026.
Fogging alone gives a dip, then a rebound. Numbers fall sharply in the first week, then climb back as new adults emerge from the same water. Mosquito control services in Malaysia that sell fogging on its own leave you booking the same visit again and again.
Resistance makes it harder. A 2026 study in Parasites & Vectors tested Aedes albopictus from Penang and Perlis. Every strain showed some resistance to every insecticide tested, including the pyrethroids often used for fogging. Spraying more of the same product is not the answer. Removing water is.
Fogging still has a place. It makes sense in three situations:
- During a dengue case or cluster. Health officers may fog an area to cut adult numbers quickly while breeding sites are cleared.
- Before an outdoor event. A short-term knock-down for a wedding or open house, on top of a clean-up.
- Large, dense vegetation. Estates or factory grounds where adults rest in thick plants.
We cover this in more depth in our guide on whether mosquito fogging in Kuala Lumpur works.
5Which Mosquito Treatment Suits Your Situation?
Quick Answer: No single method controls Aedes. Breeding-site removal and larviciding stop the next generation, residual spray catches adults resting near the house, fogging is for emergencies and traps show whether numbers are falling. The table below compares the five methods that mosquito control services in Malaysia use and when each one fits.
| Method | What it does | What it kills | When it is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breeding-site removal | Empties, covers or drains standing water | Larvae and eggs before they become adults | Every visit, and weekly by the owner |
| Larviciding | Treats water that cannot be removed, such as drains and roof gutters | Larvae in water that stays | Monthly, or after heavy rain |
| Residual barrier spray | Treats shady resting spots on walls, hedges and under porches | Adults resting near the house | Every 4 to 8 weeks |
| Fogging or misting | Space spray that drifts through the air | Flying adults on the day only | Outbreaks or on health office advice |
| Traps and monitors | Ovitraps or lure traps that catch or count mosquitoes | Egg-laying females and trend checks | Checked on each visit |

Match the method to the life stage. For most homes, mosquito control services in Malaysia pair breeding-site removal with a residual spray. Properties with drains, sumps or ponds need larviciding too. Fogging adds value only when adults must be reduced today.
After a dengue case in the house or at the office, some owners also book a sanitisation and disinfection service for shared areas. Sanitisation does not kill mosquitoes, but it gives staff and families peace of mind while the mosquito work runs. Our sanitisation service page covers what that involves.
6How Often Should You Book Mosquito Control?
Quick Answer: Most landed homes need monthly mosquito control in the rainy season and less in dry months. Condo units can often manage with quarterly visits, while restaurants and factories suit a monthly programme. Construction sites usually need a visit every two weeks until handover. The chart below shows typical frequency by property. Illustrative schedule.
| Property | Visits per year | Visits | Typical schedule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Condo unit | 4 | Quarterly, plus after outbreaks | |
| Landed home | 12 | Monthly in the rainy season | |
| Restaurant or shoplot | 12 | Monthly, with reports | |
| Factory or warehouse | 12 | Monthly, with reports | |
| Construction site | 26 | Fortnightly until handover |

Rain sets the pace. Mosquito control services in Malaysia follow the weather. The north-east monsoon from November to March and the inter-monsoon months bring more rain and more breeding. Three things push the schedule up:
- Lots of water-holding spots. Big gardens, many plant pots, ponds or open drains.
- Nearby dengue cases. A case in your area is a signal to tighten the schedule for a few weeks.
- Construction and storage. Sites with tyres, drums and tarps collect rainwater faster than anyone can tip it out.
Between visits, a ten-minute weekly walk does most of the work: tip out trays, clear gutters, cover tanks and flush drains. For factories, warehouses and offices, mosquito work usually sits inside a wider commercial pest control contract.

7How Do You Choose Mosquito Control Services You Can Trust?
Quick Answer: Check the licence, then the method. Trustworthy mosquito control services in Malaysia walk your whole property, show you the breeding sites they find and explain which step targets which life stage. They use registered products and leave a written report. Be wary of anyone who offers to fog without first checking for standing water.
Every company that applies pesticides must follow the Pesticides Act 1974 (Act 149), which controls the products used and the licensing of operators. Ask for the licence number. Then watch for these red flags:
- No inspection. A quote given over the phone for “fogging the house” skips the step that matters.
- Fogging every visit. Routine fogging with no breeding-site work builds resistance and does not last.
- No product details. You should be told what was sprayed and how long to stay away.
- No report. Without a record, a condo committee or health officer has nothing to check.
Owners have a legal duty too. The Destruction of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975 puts the duty to prevent mosquito breeding on owners and occupiers, and health officers can issue compounds where larvae are found. NPC’s licence and Ministry of Health registration are on the NPC Pest Control homepage.
8Conclusion: Empty the Water, Then Treat the Rest
Quick Answer: Aedes breeds in small containers of standing water around your home or premises. Fogging alone does not reach it. Mosquito control services in Malaysia work when they remove breeding sites first, then add larviciding, residual spray on resting spots, fogging only when needed and regular visits with written reports.
Before you book, leave your pots and containers as they are, note when and where you get bitten, and clear access to gutters and drains. Expect an inspection, breeding-site advice, targeted treatment and a written report in any plan from mosquito control services in Malaysia that you accept.

9Frequently Asked Questions
1. What do mosquito control services in Malaysia include?
A full mosquito service starts with an inspection of the compound, roof gutters, drains, plant pots and any containers that hold water. It then covers breeding-site removal, larvicide in water that cannot be emptied, residual spray on resting spots, fogging only where needed, and a written report with a follow-up visit.
2. Does fogging kill Aedes mosquitoes?
Fogging kills flying adults that the mist touches on the day. It does not reach eggs and larvae in water, and it leaves no lasting effect. New mosquitoes can emerge within about a week, so fogging works only as part of a plan that removes breeding sites.
3. How long does a mosquito treatment last?
A residual barrier spray on resting surfaces usually lasts four to eight weeks, depending on rain and sun. Larvicide in drains lasts a few weeks. Breeding-site removal lasts as long as the owner keeps containers empty, which is why weekly checks between visits matter.
4. Is mosquito spray safe for children and pets?
A licensed operator uses products approved under the Pesticides Act 1974 and applies them to outdoor resting spots, not to living areas. Keep children and pets away until the spray has dried, usually about an hour, and ask the technician for the product name and safety data sheet.
5. Does NPC Pest Control offer free mosquito inspections?
Yes. NPC Pest Control inspects homes, condos, restaurants, factories and construction sites across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor for free. Call 03-8061 1875, Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm, or request an inspection through our contact page.
