Cockroaches in the Bathroom: Where They Hide

Seeing a cockroach come out of the floor drain is one of the most common complaints in Malaysian homes. Bathrooms give them water, warmth and a direct road from the sewer.

Knowing where they hide is the first step to keeping them out.

Their favourite hiding spots

  • Floor drains without a proper cover.
  • Gaps around pipes under the sink.
  • Behind the toilet bowl and inside cracked tiles.
  • Damp cabinets with old bottles and towels.

Why the bathroom?

Cockroaches can survive a long time without food, but not without water. A bathroom that stays wet overnight is perfect for them.

Gaps around pipes and cabinets under the sink are an easy hiding spot.

Cockroaches are mostly active at night. Seeing one in the day often means there are many more out of sight.

Simple fixes

  1. Fit floor drains with covers that close when not in use.
  2. Seal gaps around pipes with sealant.
  3. Pour hot water down drains once a week.
  4. Keep the bathroom dry and well ventilated.

Quick tipLeave the bathroom door open and the fan on for an hour after showering. A drier room is far less attractive to cockroaches.

When they keep coming back

If cockroaches return even after you have sealed and cleaned, they may be living in the drains or wall cavities. A professional treatment can reach those areas.
